Lousewort (Pedicularis canadensis) near Little Switzerland.

Also known as Wood Betony or Beefsteak (!)  Plant.  Photographed on May 12.  It took me awhile to figure out what this was.  If you click on the name of the post "Lousewort" above, the link includes a lot of information about this "hemiparasitic" plant. It's called "lousewort" because people used to think that cattle would become infested with lice upon brushing up against it.

This is a new one for me.  I love the leaves.  The Crabtree Falls trail is a one mile hike downhill until you get to the Falls. It was in bloom at lower elevations.

A cool fern near Crabtree Falls (Little Switzerland)

People who study ferns are called "pteridologists."  I think that would be a nice career.  I'm becoming very interested in ferns!

My boot got in the way of this photo.
